Miranda Hobbes
“Sexy is the thing I try to get to see me as after I win them over with my personality.”
Sensible, self-assured and successful are words typically attributed to a lawyer, and to Miranda Hobbes as well. The character Miranda plays is quite strong and intimidating. As a lawyer, she is totally competitive with a no-nonsense attitude. She has many achievements when it comes to her job and she is proud of it, but can still remain very down to earth. But she’s not quite doing well in another aspect, that is in relationships. When it pertains to the love stuff, she is a bit less self-assured and has not done very well. She tries to hide in the guise of cynicism and sarcastic jokes pertaining to the matter. Her gullibility and vulnerability are not that evident from the outside since she displays such strong personality as a corporate lawyer. Her being overcritical is the thing that perhaps hinders successful relationship. She sets such a high standard on men, and she really doesn’t let people come in that easily. Opening up to others is one problem in her she has to resolve.
She had found a relationship she decided she had to give a try, that is with Steve, a bartender she met and had several flings with. Miranda was ever doubtful of her feelings for Steve and is often irritated with Steve’s childlike manners specially when it comes to serious manners. The two of them tried very hard but they don’t need an expert to tell them that it simply ain’t working. So they parted ways, at least as lovers, but their friendship was intact. One night, Miranda and Steve accidentally hit it off and weeks later Miranda discovered she was pregnant. Much to her dismay, Miranda had decided to have an abortion because she simply has no time for the baby. But just minutes later she decided not to have the procedure, she is to keep the baby. As months passed, Miranda is now doubtful that she is going to be a good mother. She thinks she lacks the motherly attitude. But with help from friends and Steve, Miranda gave birth to a baby she named Brady.
I am really impressed with Miranda’s character. I really admire strong and powerful women, and I guess that is the reason I love these four sassy ladies. Miranda exhibits the Type A behavior, and it’s evident she was able to handle tough things with this behavior. She is achievement oriented, and prices her time very highly. She never misses out an opportunity to score high and has many achievements because of her personal style of dealing with things. I am not sure if that is totally a bad thing but it certainly has worked in her favor (she never developed heart problem anyway). Miranda is best known for her cynicism, maybe it’s because she is a lawyer. But come to think of it in Freudian view.. hmm.. could it be that she is fixated to the oral stage in her childhood? Has she become an oral aggressive because of that? She has her own pessimistic approach in life and has a strong blend of cynicism. But it could also be thought that this is just her way of masking her weakness when it pertains to love. Some sort of defense mechanism perhaps. She wanted so badly to find the perfect love, but she just shows the opposite, being very pessimistic bout love, a reaction formation. Throughout the show, Miranda also displays intellectualization, so as to detach her emotions regarding stuffs (as most lawyers and doctors need to do) and rationalization (for her behaviors that fall short of the normal). Her relationship with Steve is a big step for her. Forming the passion first, they just decided to develop the intimacy and commitment later. Just like any other relationship with no strong foundations, it didn’t work well. Miranda has difficulty opening up to others and so the commitment side of the love triangle failed to form. She also cannot put with Steve’s childish behaviors when there are problems, crying and watching Scooby-Doo, regressing back to his early days as a child.
Miranda Hobbes' Famous Lines:
“Do any of you have a completely unremarkable friend or maybe a houseplant I could go to dinner with on Saturday night?”
“And what, if you don’t find him (your soul mate), you’re incomplete? That is so dangerous .. Soul mates only exist in the Hallmark aisle of Duane Reade Drugs.”
“I’m not holding your hand again through this Carrie. No phone calls, no crying.”
