Fear Factor
Are there old-fashioned phobias and modern ones? Phobia or Phobic Disoder is an intensed or irrational fear of specific objects or situations. New kinds of phobias are emerging today but until now they are still divided into three categories : Specific Phobia, which is intensed or irrational fear of something e.g. Arachnophobia, which is fear of spiders, Dental phobia, which is fear of dentist, etc. Agoraphobia, a paralysing terror of anything outside the safety of the home and last but not the lease Social Phobia, which is an intensed fear of being humiliated or embarassed in social situations.
Intensed fear because of phobic objects or situations cause the phobics to experience racing heart beat, sweating, difficulty in breathing etc. Here are a list of some common phobias:
Some of the new sets of invented phobias nowadays are the Commitophobia which is a fear of only having sex with one person for the rest of your life. Guess what’s Phobiaphonia? It is the fear of losing your mobile phone(while using it). If there are new sets of phobias, we can also pick-up some ald-fashioned phobia like Ablutophobia which is a fear of the hot tap.
Many people suffer from Phobias which may range from slight annoyances to disabling. We must believe that we can overcome our phobias, so that we can control our fears. When I first heard the term “Phobia” , I asked myself if I have one of them but it’s too hard for me to determine or find out. I knew a friend of mine who had overcomed her Acrophobia or fear of high places. Last month we climbed Mount Maculot in Batangas and we found out at the middle of our struggle going up that she had this kind of phobia. She felt dizzy, racing heart beats, intensed fear, etc. that she thought that she can’t stand it anymore. Being determined to face her phobia, she overcomed it. If all of the Phobic persons are determined to confront their phobic objects or situations, then there will be a chance that they will overcome their own fears .
